Treating Depression that occurs in Schizophrenia

The following treatment guidelines are meant as a reference tool only, and are not intended as treatment advice or to replace the clinical decision-making process of psychiatrists or other health professionals who administer these treatments. In clinical practice there are often good reasons why treatment approaches differ from what is described here.

 

A Major Depressive Episode that affects someone who has Schizophrenia should be treated according to the standard approach for a Depressive episode, while also providing the standard treatment for Schizophrenia.  The only modification to be made to the treatment approach for Schizophrenia is that Typical Antipsychotics should be avoided (in Steps 4b and 5b), because these medications may worsen depressive symptoms
