Psychoeducation for Schizophrenia

The following treatment guidelines are meant as a reference tool only, and are not intended as treatment advice or to replace the clinical decision-making process of psychiatrists or other health professionals who administer these treatments. In clinical practice there are often good reasons why treatment approaches differ from what is described here.

The goal of psychoeducation is to help individual and their families better understand the nature of their condition and know the steps needed to manage it.  Because Schizophrenia is a life-long condition, it is essential that individuals become active participants with their treating teams in managing their condition.  In most cases, family members are also key players in helping individuals to remain motivated and consistent with their treatments.

Psychoeducation is usually offered by the treating team as an informal seminar to patients and their families, where the various details of understanding and managing Schizophrenia are discussed.
