Purging

Purging involves the use of methods designed to eliminate food from one's body. These methods include self-induced vomiting and the misuse of laxatives, diuretics, enemas or other medications.

All of these methods can be physically dangerous. Excessive vomiting and use of laxatives, diuretics and enemas can cause the body to lose electrolytes, which can be very dangerous and even life threatening.

Moreover, most of these methods do not actually work. Laxatives, diuretics and enemas, for example, do not eliminate food from one's body, but only water and salts.

Purging is usually performed as a way to compensate for binge-eating. It is a key symptom of Anorexia Nervosa, Binge-Eating/Purging Type, and Bulimia Nervosa, Purging Type.
