Eating Disorder Not Otherwise Specified (NOS)
An Eating Disorder NOS is a condition that involves abnormal eating patterns and/or excessive weight loss behaviors but that does not meet the full criteria for either Anorexia Nervosa or Bulimia Nervosa.
Binge-Eating Disorder is an example of an Eating Disorder NOS. Other examples include:
- Women who meet all the criteria for Anorexia Nervosa except that they continue to have regular menses.
- Individuals who meet all the criteria for Anorexia Nervosa expect that their weight remains in the normal range.
- Individuals who meet all the criteria for Bulimia Nervosa expect that the binge-eating behaviors and inappropriate compensatory mechanisms occur less often than twice a week or for a duration of less than 3 months.
- Repeatedly chewing and spitting out, without swallowing, large amounts of food.
