Rett's Disorder

This is a very rare condition that has so far been reported to occur only in females. It is characterized by normal fetal and perinatal development, normal head circumference at birth, and normal cognitive and motor development up until age 5 months.

However, from ages 5-48 months there occurs an abnormal slowing of head growth, the loss of previously acquired purposeful hand skills and the development of stereotyped hand movements, the loss of social engagement (though this can develop again later), the appearance of poorly coordinated gait or trunk movements, severely impaired language development , and severe slowing of movements.

This condition is usually associated with severe or profound mental retardation.
